A mammogram should be performed on a schedule determined by your doctor, based on your age, whether you have the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, and family history. A 3D mammogram can detect breast cancer in the earliest stages when treatment is more effective. A standard mammogram produces a single image of each breast and is less effective for women with dense breast tissue. At Insite Radiology, our imaging system creates a high-definition, 3D image of the entire breast structure.

What is a 3D mammogram?

Our state-of-the-art breast imaging produces highly-detailed images of the breast from many different angles, generating a 3D representation of the breast. This process is more accurate and detailed than the single image produced with a traditional mammogram.

How does a 3D mammogram work?

With a 3D mammogram, a series of images are captured by a robotic arm that moves over the breast, creating 200 to 300 images, to produce an accurate 3D rendering of the entire breast. For women who are at higher risk of developing breast cancer, or who have dense breast tissue, a 3D mammogram is an answer.

What is the procedure like to experience?

The experience is similar to a standard mammogram, with the breast placed between two plates. The difference lies in the series of images created by the robotic arm on our 3D breast imaging system.

Breast cancer screening: 3D mammogram

At Insite Radiology, we take a fresh, modern approach to image testing. We believe our patients deserve greater comfort with superior results, and have equipped our private center in St. Johns Town Center in Jacksonville with state-of-the-art imaging technology.

Each of our board-certified radiologists is fellowship-trained at elite institutions such as Harvard, the Mayo Clinic, and Johns Hopkins. Our advanced 3D mammogram system is far superior to the older, outdated systems found in most imaging centers or hospitals. The images generated by the device can be evaluated singly in “slices,” or as a 3D model of the breast. The radiation emitted by the device is well within acceptable limits set by the FDA, similar to a traditional mammogram.

What are the benefits of a 3D mammogram?

A standard, single-image mammogram may require a woman to return for testing two or more times to confirm or rule out a suspected abnormality. The benefits include:

  • Produces precise, detailed 3D images for women with dense breast tissue
  • It can detect cancer in the earliest stages
  • Identifies tumor size with greater accuracy
  • Improves cancer detection at an average of 40 percent
  • Safe for women with breast implants
  • Reduces the number of false positives
  • Resolves the problem of overlapping tissues that may obscure abnormalities
